Book Review - The Witches by Roald Dahl

SETTING:

The story starts in England and then continues in Oslo, Norway. The story ends again in England in "The Hotel Magnificent."

CHARACTERS:

The main characters are, Billy, Billy's grandmother, Billy's friend, Bruno Jenkins and The Grand High Witch

PROBLEM/CONFLICT:

The problem is there are hundreds of witches meeting secretly at The Hotel Magnificent where Billy overhears them planning to kill all of the kids in the world using "Formula 86 Delayed Action Mouse-Maker." Billy has to come up with a way to stop them.

MAIN EVENTS:

  • Billy and his mom and dad are in a car crash and his mom and dad die.
  • Billy has to go and live with his grandmother
  • Billy sees his first witch
  • Billy goes on vacation with his grandmother and gets turned into a mouse.
  • Billy uses the witches own poison to kill them.

CONCLUSION:

Billy changes in two ways - inside and outside. As a human boy, Billy wasn't in control of his life and he was sad. When he became a mouse, he was happy and confident and he was able to solve all of his problems by himself.

MY OPINION:

I liked this book! There is a lot of humour and action. Billy's grandmother smoked cigars!!??

My Favourite Olympic Snowboarder

My favourite snowboarder is Shawn White.

Shawn has won gold at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. He really impressed me with a move that no one ever did - a double Mick-Twist. For anyone who dosent know what that is; it is a backflip and a 360 together - to think he did not 1, but 2 of those moves in one jump!

I have three cool things in common with Shawn:

  1. We both love to snowboard

  2. We both like to skateboard

  3. We both have red hair

Shawn white's nick name is the Flying Tomato!

The onley thing wrong with Shawn White is that he is not CANADIAN!

Spy Smuggler

This story takes place in a small town in France during the German occupation in WW2. The main character is named Paul Lelaud. Paul's father was killed by the Germans and Paul is very angry that they are in his country. He is also angry with people that cooperate with the Germans. He thinks his uncle Maurice cooperates with them but he is secretly in the Resistance. Some of the important things that happened in this book are:
  • Paul's friend, Emile and his family were taken away to a concentration camp
  • Paul got in trouble for beating up his teacher
  • Paul joined the French Resistance

Paul starts off being a really angry person. Paul begins to understand the situation and then he is able to do something to solve the problem of the Germans in his country. In that way, Paul begins to grow up.

I found this story very interesting and fun to read!

Simo Hayha

A hero of war – front headline! Read all about it – different countries and everything!

Hello! I am fascinated by the military and by war stories and today I am going to tell you about a great war hero from WWII! His name is Simo Hayha.

Simo Hayha was born in Finland. He joined the army in 1925. Before being a soldier, Simo was a farmer and a hunter. He won many trophies for marksmanship. He started fighting in the army as a sniper in 1939. Simo had a very unique fighting style that made him stand out; for one thing, his camouflage was completely white which was creative and smart because it made him invisible on the snow covered battle field. Another thing was he fought all alone and had no back up. I think this shows how brave and confident he was. Another thing that shows how smart and thoughtful Simo was, was he didn't use a regular scope on his rifle. He used the far less common iron sites for 3 very good reasons, 1 -because he knew that a telescopic site would fog up easily and 2 – because he knew that reflection from the sun's rays would reveal his position to the enemy and 3 – the iron site gave more visibility.

He was excellent at stealthy movement and concealed himself from the enemy with smart tricks like compacting snow in his mouth to stop his breath from being visible in the cold weather.

Simo was so effective as a soldier that the Russian army launched several attacks specifically aimed at him. He escaped these attacks up until March 6th of 1940 when he was shot in the Jaw by a Russian soldier. He was found by his fellow soldiers who reported that half of his facing was missing. Simo was alive but unconscious for over a week. He regained consciousness and began to recover on March 13th, 1940 which was the day that peace was declared. Soon after the war, Simo was promoted from Corporal to second Lieutenant by Field Marshall Gustaf Emil Mannerhein. No one else in the history of the Finnish army was promoted that fast. Simo will go down in military history as one of the best snipers ever.

Because of the amazing things I have just told you about I am sure you can see why I think Simo Hayha is such a great hero. Heros make us believe that anything is possible. We can all be better people in life if we try to be like our heros. I hope you all have heros that inspire you like Simo Hayha has inspired me.

Billy is 16 years when this story begins and is really excited about going to WAR. Billy goes to WAR and sees friends of his get killed. He discovers that trenches are cold ,muddy places and WAR is much different then he imagined.
